The Editors, GOLF MAGAZINE |
To a game filled with contradictions, we add another: cast iron
heads by Ben Hogan. The company synonymous with forged irons joins
the cast, so to speak, with the Edge CFT, Hogan's most forgiving
offering. |
| Doug Lair |
Misses land close to the target, shot after shot, even on some
significant misses. |
|
The Editors, GOLF MAGAZINE |
Testers detect more forgiveness on direction than on distance, and
thin shots offer better results than heavy ones. ...Many testers
also have trouble hitting the CFT around the greens. It seems
distance control can be problematic. |
| Lee Neisler |
What it lacks in feel it more than makes up for in forgiveness.
|
| Steve Critelli |
The Equalizer [pitching] wedge is hotter than the rest, producing
uneven distance on pitches. Then again, with as many greens as
you'll hit with this club, that may not matter. |

Distance |
|
The Editors, GOLF MAGAZINE |
There is one disadvantage to the large cavity: Sometimes it works
too well. Some testers note a loss of distance due to ballooning.

I don't need a club that makes me hit a 6-iron from 155 |

Feel |
|
The Editors, GOLF MAGAZINE |
The CFT is ideal for mid-handicappers like Lair and Ytterberg. Not
good enough to handle Hogan's famed blades, these guys are plenty
good to appreciate the added feedback from the soft titanium face,
while benefiting from the forgiveness. |
| Hoai Hoang |
I can feel the head throughout the swing. It is very stable at
impact, with a soft, solid feel on center hits. |
|
|
Playability |
|
The Editors, GOLF MAGAZINE |
Ultimately, no club can do it all, and on the feel/forgiveness
tradeoff scale, the CFT falls squarely on the forgiveness side.
These qualities make the club a tougher sell for low handicappers,
who prefer irons they can work -- a club with more soul. |
| Don Ytterberg |
The cavity, designed to produce higher shots, works best in long
irons, especially for players who typically have no business
carrying them. I selected long irons over fairway woods to attack
long par 3s and approach shots. Normally I don't carry anything
longer than a 5-iron. |
| Bob O'Brien |
I want a little more excitement on good shots. Still, you can't
argue with the straightness. |

I started playing golf in the beginning of '03 and i got hooked on the game
so quick. I got good enough to shoot in the mid to low 80's consistently. I
was going to try out for my high school team so i wanted some new irons
thatfit me well. i went down to roger dunns and tested alot of irons, TA7,
nike forged, Macgregor v foil, Callaway x-14 and x-16 and i was leaning more
towards the v foil then i got to hit the edge cft's and they area truly
remarkable club, soft feel, beautiful club. Nice high ball which i love,
deep grooves which may chew up a ball but worth it with all the spin the
iron produces, im a little iffy on the shafts the ben hogan #4 shafts, Im
looking to reshaft/grip my clubs so they'll be in tip top shape for the
season. these irons are definitely worth the coin. good luck

Bought these irons mainly because I couldn't resist the rockbottom price of
380 bucks. Very easy to hit and forgiving, nice looks, great quality. Was
used to True Temper S300 shafts – if you are as well, don't buy the Hogan
shaft Number 4, which is also considered stiff. It's way to whippy and
things get worse, the longer the iron. Another point is the titanium face
construction: You get an unbelievable spin and a nice pingy sound, but the
ball sure suffers. After two or three holes it's totally scuffed and you can
chuck it (tried many different brands, same result).
All in all, however surely a set of clubs worth buying!
Customer Service:
Rockbottom rules, extremely fast and reliable. Even all the way to
Switzerland.

ben hogan edge cft ironsSummary:
I tried numerous irons before settling on these. Previously was playing 2002
BB's and liked them, but they broke and wanted something smaller and less
klunky. To give you an idea of my preference, I also really liked the Ping
I3's, Cleveland TA7's, Callaway X16's . Was really looking for something
with a soft feel. Tried hitting the hogan edge cft's in a reg. flex graphite
and really liked them. My instructor tried hitting them too and said the
clubs really launch the ball. When hit in the sweet spot, they really do
feel sweet. No harshness, just a sweet feel. I get the forged softness, but
they are a cavity back and give me enough forgiveness that I need. Off
center hits give enough feedback without being too harsh.
I had never really considered them before I tried hitting them in the store.
Didnt know if I liked the looks of them at first, but even the looks of the
clubs have grown on me. All in all, I am very pleased with these clubs. I
got a bit more distance versus my old clubs, but that could also be due to
the difference in flex in shafts versus my old clubs. I really like the
stock graphite shafts on these clubs too.

Before purchasing the CFT I played with Hogan blades, 1983 Radials to to
exact. The older I get the more difficult it is for me to muscle the forged
blades. However, after test driving the CFT's I was hooked. The forgiveness
factor is everything the manufacturer claimed it would be. The #3 & 4 irons
are so easy to hit that I've added a # 1 and 2 iron to my bag. I dont' know
why I waited so long to move to a cavityback, but Iam glad I did.

Prior to purchasing these, I played with a set of Cobra Gravity Backs for
the last maybe 6-7 years [I bought them when they first came out]. I thought
they were ok, but I was struggling. I decided that maybe it was time to look
for new this year. I narrowed it down to the TA-7's and the CFT's. I hit my
club against both. The CFT felt best to me. I demo'd a set on course...and
that was it. I had to have them. Then one night I went to Golf Galaxy. They
spent the time to fit me and let me hit every club in the store new and
used. I hit the TA-7's, RAC's, Ping, Cobra SSI, MacGregor V-Foil, Mizuno
[various]...all game improvement clubs tho. The CFT still felt best. I hit
it against my Cobras...still loved it. The salesman checked lie and the CFT
fit perfect. Sold. I got hem and have only had them out a couple times, but
let me just say I LOVE these clubs. My favorite club is the 3 iron. NEVER
have I hit a 3 iron like this. I can use it at just under 200 yds out and
put it on the green? Simply amazing. I know club decision is very
subjective, but if you are looking, you may want to give these a swing. I
decided this time to try everything in the store before I bought and it
worked. This club fits me and my game perfectly...mayb it will for you too.

well, I came home to find the car had been broken in to. As soon as I saw
the lock had been punched in, I knew the bats had been lifted. I had just
purchased a new Titleist 975J.VS, I had a Ping putter that my folks had
given me, and the bag was also a present. What was my first thought? "The b#stards
have knocked off the Hogans..." Suffice it to say, the CFT's were the first
thing that I replaced. They are great. I had the Edge Pro before that, and
as good a club as they are, the CFT's knock at least 5 shots off a round. I
no longer need a 3 wood to hit off the carpet; just pull out the 3 iron. It
really is that good. In fact, I am thinking of getting the 1 iron as well.
